Though most largest search engines do not 'spider' the keyword Meta
Tags on your page, and in some cases ignore these completely, the use
of Meta Tags on your page still serves an important purpose. There are
literally hundreds, even thousands of smaller search engines scattered
all across the Internet. Whilst the bigger engines tend to 'spider'
whole pages instead and obtain their results from that, these smaller
search engines don't have as much physical space to work with and must
do things differently. It is in these particular engines you will find
that Meta Tags are still very important.

Uhm, has nothing to do with space. A small SE can just fetch the whole
page, and detect the keywords itself, and store the 10-20 most important
ones instead of the ones given.

Also, why waste time on a SE that might give you 1 visitor a month while
with concentrating on your page in another way might give you 1 visitor a

So what?

Name one! Actually, for interested readers, there are, or used to be,
lots of smaller search engines but really all these are and were local
databases on subjects like the number of tractor manufacturers in
Oregon. There's no use submitting to this if your site is about
stamp-collecting. And you live in Nebraska. It was quickly recognised
that only the main engines actually drove any traffic to sites which
is why only the uninitiated are impressed by SEO companies who offer
to submit your site to thousands of search engines, if they do bother
to do any submitting at all (try asking them for individual submission
receipts from each engine!) there really isn't any point in the first
place because they're irrelevant.
That quite took me back...
