I will share 'some ways' [versus a program, etc] that works for me.
Maybe others will share other ideas with you to give you more options
or thoughts to consider.
Cost: free outside of time involvement
Time to "take effect": Up to you
Methods: there are two ...
Method 1: create and share content that people will likely find
resourceful, informative, and worth sharing a link to from their
Method 2: Go to search engine of choice and type in related
keyword/keyphrase of choice.
2a: Contact some sites that come up in the lising to exchange links
2b: Look at those sites backlinks and contact some of the sites they
have links from for exchanging links or submitting your link to.
Optional Method 3: find authorative like sites or directories that let
people submit an URL for possible inclusion on their listings. Not to
be confused with Free For All [ffa] sites where you submit an URL and
on refresh it will appear or jumbled into a big long "list" of links
[sometimes without some descriptive text shared about the site as to
why a person would want to click on the link] - kind of like those
pages from Bravenet. I am more talking about "authorative like sites
or directories" like if you have a regional business in, say, Indiana
then you would seek out Indiana themed sites to trade links with that
may help bring in interested traffic to your site.
Method 3 - Search "keyword"+"add site", "keyword"+"submit site",
"keyword"+"add url", etc.
Method 4 - Search "keyword"+"gossamer threads"
Method 5 - http://www.isedb.com /,
http://www.strongestlinks.com/directories.php , http://ecki.com/links /

I'm not sure who Amos is - and what you're replying to :-)
But anyway you should *not* add a space between "link:" and your url.
link:www.domain.com asks Google to show a sample of the sites that link to
link: www.domain.com (with a space) finds all pages that contain the text
"www.domain.com" *and* the word "link".
