been ##1-3, but now I seem to be completely out (I think I know why). I
have corrected the duplication problem based on my assumption. Will I ever
be back now? How long might it take for the search engine to forgive me?
Or is that forever?

to the search engine. In the case of Google, you would clean up your site
and write to email@example.com, explaining that you have corrected the problem
and that you promise never to do it again. It takes human intervention from
the search engine staff to reverse a penalty like that.
As Stacey said, it might also be that your site wasn't available the last
time the spider came by for a visit. Wait a few weeks and see if it returns.
Then contact MSN, explaining what a bad boy you were. :-)
