I am new to SEO and humbly our of my element, but since our company
lauched a website early this year for our medical practice services,
we've seen a significant increase in sales - mostly from online ads. As
we look to improve our natural search results, I'd like your opinions
on which direction to travel first...

SEO - one suggesting that good, solid content is what will get you to
the top; the other suggesting that backlinks and other subtle "tricks"
will improve results.

I don't really have an opinion here - I am just looking for next steps
in evolving our site. The former above sounds a bit idealistic, and the
later a bit shady. In fact, I would presume the best path is a
combination of both. Regardless, I'd like to know your opinions on
where to focus efforts in the coming months...

if your site already has good content then you'd do well to make sure
every pertinent online medical resource knows about it and has a link
to it. No harm in letting them know you exist.

back links without good content is not that useful. Good content without
back links has some use though, if the content is indeed good, you will get

No contradiction here - you need _both_ good content and links.

The best solution is to plan the site so that every piece of content
added adds also good internal linking with good anchor texts. If you
do it right at the beginning later every added page counts twice - as
content and internal links.

You will need external links too. That's standard advice here - start
adding your url to the signature :)
