change domain without losing SE ranking?

I want to rebrand my company. I have a domain which has OK rankings
in SEs. Would it be possible to change the domain to without losing
rankings - maybe over time? I could run both sites in parallel but there'd
be big maintenance overhead so wouldn't want to do that long term.

If you make the old domain do a 301 redirect to the new domain,
the search engines will give the new domain about the same
ranking, and anyone following a link to the old domain or typing
in the old domain will see the new domain.  You can see how it
works by going to (note the "-" character).

That *would* hurt your ranking with search engines by triggering
the duplicate content filter.  If you ever get into a situation
where you really need to have two sites with the same content,
you can avoid the duplicate content penalty by using robots.txt
to tell search engines to not index one of the duplicate sites,
but of course that site won't come up in any searches.)
