I have been wondering: is it that sensible to use the screensaver settings
to switch off the backlight after 10 minutes? Each time I need to continue
working, I have to move the mouse switching it on again.
The thought arises: is this switching on and off favourable for the life
span of the screen bicklight, compared to leaving it on continuously?

Yes it is true that turning them on and off a lot does shorten the lamp.
Also true, leaving them on all of the time or a lot does so too. Most of
the lamps are rated somewhere between 10,000 to 50,000 hours. Although I
noticed that you get much longer life by dimming the display. Even if
you turn it off and on a lot.

If you are worried a lot. You can do what I do. As I use my laptop
mostly on my computer desk and have it hooked up to an external monitor.
Thus most of the hours is on the external monitor and the laptop lamp
gets very little use.

Regardless of what you do, you will most likely replace the laptop long
before the backlight reaches the end of its life.

Of course they can (and do) fail, but they will do that regardless of what
you do.
