Hi All:

I currently have a PC with Windows Media Center Edition. The TV tuner
card on the PC just has one coax port but it is a dual tuner card with
the signal apparently being split by the card itself. There's not a
second coax port.

I have Time Warner cable (not digital cable, so no cable box) hooked
to the TV card. With this configuration, I can have the Media Center
record two programs simultameously to the PC's hard drive.

Here's my question. I'm getting ready to move to an area where cable
is not available and I'll be getting Direct TV. I know that to use
the PC with this, I'll have to have a Direct TV Receiver box which
connects into the coax port on the TV card.

My question is this. Will the TV card then be able to internally
split this signal as well like it did with the cable signal so that I
can record two shows at once? Or would I only be able to record one
at a time? I'm not sure how the dual tuner card works with a
satellite receiver as opposed to cable for the input. Again, there's
just one coax port, so I can't connect two receivers.

Maybe I would be better off using the Direct TV DVR instead of just a
Direct TV receiver and then just watching recorded programming off of
the Direct TV DVR on the PC instead of off the hard drive.

Can anyone advise whether I'll be able to record two things at once
via Media Center to the hard drive?

Thanks for any help!
Drew

Your dual tuner card has one coax input because it has an internal splitter.
You can record two Cable TV shows at the same time if you are not watching
live TV also.

You will not be able to record two shows at once on MCE with Direct TV
because you only have one set top box. You would more likely connect to
DirectTV set top box via Composite Video and Stereo Audio rather than coax.

There is a possible scenario where MCE's dual tuner would allow you to
record two shows from DirectTV.

If the DirectTV receiver is a dual channel and has two RF channels output to
two TVs, it would be possible to use a splitter to combine the two rf
outputs into one rf input for MCE.

I would advice you get and use the Dual Tuner DVR and record your DirectTV
shows on that.

I have a Dishnetwork VIP622 DVR, it is a High Definition dual tuner DVR, I
can record two shows at once and watch a recorded show at the same time.

Or I can record one show and watch live another show, if the DVR uses tuner
2 for recording and I am watching tuner 1.

Thanks Carl:

So, if I just go with the Direct TV dual tuner DVR, I'll just connect
it to my PC via Composite Video and Stereo Audio cables (depending on
TV card inputs).

The DVR then basically becomes a video input to MCE and I'll just play
and schedule recordings to and from the DVR by using the DVR remote.

That way I won't have to use any hard drive space on the PC.

Is that right?

Thanks!

No hard drive space used on MCE if you don't record anything from DirectTV
on MCE.

I really like the Dishnetwork HD DVR. I mostly use it to time shift, then
delete the recording after I have watched the program. I do keep some Movies
that I have recorded. Dishnetwork have a one time fee to connect an external
USB hard drive to store programs instead of on the built-in Hard drive.

I especially like the way the Timers work, once you get the programs that
you regularly watch programmed, Dish just records them with no interaction
from me. The program are always recorded and I can watch in my own good
time.
