I had to reformat my hard drive for a Sony Vaio Computor/ it didn't come with
a recovery cd & there are none available since I purchased in 2004/ I have
the windows product code on the back of my computor/ can I get a windows home
edition somewhere & use my code? do I have to purchase this?

Are you sure there is not a recovery partition on the hard drive? You
probably were suppose to create your own recovery discs if it didn't come
with any.

Otherwise you have a few options -

- Buy a copy of XP (not sure if you can do that retail anymore, might have
to be off ebay, craigs list, etc.)
- See if Sony sells the replacement discs through their support site
- Find someone else with a similar Sony PC who has recovery discs and borrow
them. Borrowing XP Home discs that are retail or from another system
probably won't work.

BTW, this is a Media Center group, in the future, you should post on a more
appropriate newsgroup (like a general XP Home forum).

yes there was a partition but it was deleted without creating the discs/ Sony
no longer sells recovery discs for this model/I can send the whole computor
back for re-imaging for $99.99 / I guess that's a cheap enough lesson/ just
thought someone would have another idea
Thanks for your response though

Seems odd that they don't still sell the discs, it's not that old of a
system.

I don't know what system you have, but I browsed the Sony support site and
randomly found several 2004 era XP-based PC's that showed the recovery discs
(for $17.95) as repair parts that can be ordered. For example, this is the
recovery set for a VAIO RS600C PC:
