I have installed an external hard drive and mapped it with a drive letter in
windows explorer. I read several post on using an external hard drive but
have not been able to get Media Center to record directly to the external
drive. I was able to list the drive in the WatchedFolders string in registry
but not able to list the external drive in the RecordPath string. Is there a
precise way to list the external drive? The choice in the settings portion
of Media Center/Recorder Storage has a +/- but does not function since only
the C path is listed

Watched folders is the wrong place to change location for recorded TV, and
registry is more difficult than necessary. Settings/TV/Recorder/Recorder
Storage. Choose drive in top item.

There is only one choice listed in the Settings/TV/Recorder/Recorder Storage.
So I can not choose another drive there. How does Media Center locate the
drives?

A couple of questions.
Do you start the computer with the external drive connected, or do you
connect it after the computer is booted. You should try the drive connected
at boot.

What is the format of the external drive, it should be NTFS.
If it is FAT you may have trouble seeing the drive, FAT32 should show.

Have you assigned a drive letter to the external drive in Computer
Management?

I have seen times when the external drive was not fully formatted as NTFS,
it did not show.
I once converted an external drive from FAT32 to NTFS, it was not correctly
recognized.

Media center should use the drive assignment in Windows XP or Vista.

Actually, the issue with FAT32 drives is the maximum file size. You run up
against the 2 Gig limitation pretty quick with DVR-MS files. If its FAT32,
I don't even know if MCE will let you choose it.
