i was using xp professional and then the hard drive died. i got a new
drive, then installed my old win 2k professional software.

under xp, the video was great but now with w2k i can only get 800 by
600 and the video is terrible. and it says i have vga.

does anyone know why this is happening and what to do about it?

thanks ...

The laptop needs the correct video driver. This is either a matter of
installing the chipset driver set or a third party driver; the former if
the video is embedded Intel video, the latter if nVidia or ATI (as
examples) chipsets. IBM support is your first destination. You will
find the specifications for your model and the required video driver.

I had a similar issue with one of my computers a few years ago, i did the
following:
.. looked for the driver of my video card
.. installed the video card driver
.. my high resolution was reactivated

Go here;
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4Z8NTP

and download; vftp1a2x.exe

Run that on you T23, or maybe read about it here first;
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/vftp1a2x.txt

Win 2000 runs *very* nice on a T23. Video is terrific.
Dump the XP on your mother-in-law, where it belongs.
