hello, i recently purchased a hp pavilon ze4300 with an 1800 amd athlon
xp. the sound card stutters periodically, and does not seem to be
related to any other apps running at the same time. i can run media
player alone playing one mp3 file and it will stutter 3-4 times during
the song. currently in my audio device properties, i have a unimodem
half-duplex audio device, and ali audio accelertor wdm driver made by
acer, audio codecs, and legacy audio drivers.

does anyone have any suggestions how i can start troubleshooting this
problem? thanks in advance for any help you could give me.

Do assume that there are possible background processes on a new
computer. From the Run command, type: msconfig[enter]. Select the
Startup tab. Look through the list of startup apps and disable those
that you don't want or need. Use this site as a guide for what each of
these do: http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php Note that
you should disable starting with Windows in the controlling application,
but unchecking the box is OK for the short term.

The Indexing Service is typically running on a new computer. You can
turn this off in Start\All Programs\Accessories\System
Tools\Administrative Tools\Services. Scroll down to the Indexing
Service, right-click properties, set to Disable, then Stop the service.
This might be the source of the mp3 stuttering as the service
intermittently reads the drive contents to construct its index.

Run Disk cleanup (from the System Tools shortcut) and Defrag the drive.
