I keep 3 or 4 years of mail in pst files of 3 month's each. Indexing thoses
pst files was not a problem until recently. I am not sure whether the problem
came up with the upgrade from the beta to the real thing. Anyway, now I can
index and search my inbox, also all my doc files stored on my HD or on the
network servers at the office. The PSt files that are stored on the network
servers (or on my HD - I tried that already) however can not be indexed.
When I open the tree to select the items to be indexed all the pst files show
up, I can select them etc. Anyone familiar with this problem? I'd be obliged
for any help.

A friend of mine found the solution.

I keep my emails in several pst files which are located on a network drive.
MDS used to index those pst files and i could search in them as well. I am
not sure when this all stopped, maybe after upgrading from the beta version
to the real thing.

Anyway, the solution is thus.
Below the root directory of the pst file (which shows up in the tree listing
in Outlook after opening it from within Outlook) there are the usal sub
directories like removed items, searchmaps and the like. I made a new map
(format: emails and postitems), moved all the emails from the root directory
to this sub map, and there you are! MDS is now able to 'see' these emails and
to index them subsequently. Oviously MDS needs the emails to be in a specifik
'emails and postitems' map to be able to index them etc.

Anyone noticed this before me? It took me a hell of a lot of time to find out.

By the way, because i was in a deadlock i tried out the Google Desktop
Search utility. In many ways it is inferior to MDS in my opinion. Glad MDS is
back on the right track for me!

A very big thankyou.

Couldn't find anything about this problem, but I couldn't index any of my
pst files. Moving all the emails down a level in the .pst folder has meant
that they are now indexed properly.

Surely microsoft should update the help for this - it gives other examples
of why the email might not be indexed. Alternatively perhaps a fix is in
order.

Glad that it helped you, Nick.

I think i saw somewhere a note that there is a new release of the Microsoft
Desktop Search out. Maybe they fixed it.
