I hate the preview window for display of things like contacts and email. it
gives way to much space to things I don't care about. is there a way to
define my own layout for preview? Or, for that matter, displayed results
columns.

Yes on the previews but unfortunately no on the columns we display.

Custom previews aren’t officially supported at this point but I can tell you
how to create them if interested. You’ll have to be comfortable with HTML as
the previews are built using HTML templates that use ASP’ish (read NOT ASP)
macros to insert the values of the currently selected row. Again this isn’t
a supported feature so I can’t guarantee that any of your previews will
continue to work in future versions of the product. But we would like to
know if skinning the previews is a feature the dev community would be
interested in the future. So let me know if there’s interest and I’ll tell
you how to do it. :)

Yes, I'm interested in knowing how to do this.
