hey guys. i have a question:
I'm looking to buy a portable dvd drive for my dell inspiron 6400 but
every drive that i've looked at comes with an ac adapter. i though if
a drive was portable then it would run off of the usb power. do you
know if my computer even has enough power for a dvd drive? i was
looking at the Sony DRXS70U External Portable Slim-Line USB 2.0 DVD
Drive from Amazon.com. Please advise me!!!!!!! Cheers, John

Most of the external DVD RW drive for the laptop I saw has an
ACadapter plug, as I had one. I am not sure about the CD RW/DVD
ROM( combo drive)
With my External DVDRW device...
..If I plug just the device USB plug alone.to my notebook .. it does
not work. The power needs for my external DVD drive ( if its AC plug
is not attached to the outlet ) overwhelms my notebook power
supply.....

I use the LiteOn SSW-8015SX. It comes with a power adapter but it is
not necesarry. I've never had any problems with it.

Most of the generic ones I've seen can be powered via USB, usually using
one of those cables that have a double-header lapto-side USB connector so
that it can draw power from 2 ports at once. This may be necessary as many
DVD drives draw close to 1 ampere and you can't get that from one USB
port alone. Many of those slimline optical drive cases also have a coaxial
power socket for just that reason; I for one prefer to use a dedicated
supply rather than tax the USB port power to its limit.
