I'm looking for a laptop to dual boot Linux and XP. I'll try to list my
requirements:
* can run OpenGL efficiently (so I guess it should have nVidia graphics,
and not onboard graphics)
* can use an external monitor with it
* is reliable, low maintenance
* has minimal setup issues under Linux
* has good battery life, handles power management correctly, power
efficiency comparable to Pentium-M or Celeron-M
* has low cost
I don't need enormous computing power, just something that works and is
easy to work with.

If in UK.

I see this line on that page:
> Graphics card 64Mb sharedIntel 852GM Dedicated to storing information about
images to be displaye d on your monitor
Does that let me run OpenGL? And are the terms 'shared' and 'dedicated'
contradictory?

That 64meg intel would not be my 1st choice. Dell laptops, for good or bad,
are very common,
and the higher-end models all have quadro-go NVIDIA chips in them (QUADRO
mind you:
stereo, hw accelerated AA lines, hw clipping planes, hw 2sided lighting).
Slightly used
ones my be pretty reasonably priced. Generic NV drivers work for me in them.
Look for Dell Precision m50/m60/m70 if you are so inclined.
I also love the IBM pro laptops with FIREGL's in them, yeah, drivers are a
pain,
but the laptops are real nice. T40p & similar models can be found, gently
used.
I've also seen some Compaq models, some quite reasonably priced, with NV
graphics.

There's also the mobility Radeon 9700 from ATI (cool HW, but
still the drivers are quite a mess, but in the last 1.5 years it
got far better)

What maintenance? A laptop is quite a capsuled system you can't
(and shouldn't) fiddle with.

Samsung P35 1600 III; I got that neat thing 2 months ago and it
really functions with Linux, for every HW there exist drivers.
The only isse is, that Samsung uses a ACPI DSDT following an
older specification (standard conform, but depreciated) so
throttling doesn't work out of the box, on the net you can find
a modified DSDT that can be loaded in the kernel alternatively,
which solves this. As a surplus it has quite a tough magnesium
housing.

You can get it for about 1400EUR.
