Right I have now got myself a possible shortlist for a new laptop (which I
am now buying this week).
Purchasing options are restricted to PC World, Currys and Comet locally.

http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/572_316040.html
ACER A3633/3613-80GB
1.5ghz Intel Celeron M
80Gb HDD, 512mb ram, DVD writer 8x

http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/572_309532.html
ACER AS1642WLMI(V2)
As above but with Pentium M and 40Gb hard drive

http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/572_313092.html
TOSHIBA A100-522
1.6ghz Celeron M
60Gb HDD, 512mb ram, 8x DVD writer

http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/572_311561.html
HEWLETT PACKARD DV5016EA
1.8ghz AMD Sempron
40Gb hdd, 1Gb ram, 8xdvd writer

http://tinyurl.com/jgs3w
Packard Bell R1004
Intel Celeron M 1.4ghz
512mb ram, 40Gb hdd, dvd writer

http://tinyurl.com/huswn
Compaq Presario V5002EA
AMD Sempron 1.6ghz hypertransport
512mb ram, 40Gb hdd, DVD writer

This is just a pick of the ones I may find locally under £600
As you can see they all have similar specifications, its just really
branding which is the issue now. I hear the Acers are very good, anyone
have any experience with those? The Packard Bell one I put in there as I
like the design, but its under the hood that matters and I am not sure about
them as a reliable manufacturer - anyone any experience with them?
Any help would be appreciated.

I would not purchase anything made by Packard Bell. They were chased out of
the US for installing used parts in their "new" systems. I never hear about
them except from someone who is living in the UK. I would not opt for a
system with a Celeron processor if I could get one with a Pentium or AMD
processor for the about the same money.

Personally, I do not care for Compaq. If I had to choose from your present
list, I would go for the ACER with the Pentium processor.

Thanks for the advice, I was wary about the Packard Bell anyway, I just
added them as it was in my price range.
I quite like the look of the Acer model. I think its the only one with a
Pentium processor in that list. Thing is I have no experience of this
company as a consumer. I did do some temp work years ago making some PCs
for them when they were a very young company but that is the extent of my
knowledge of them. I have no idea on whether they are a good reliable
company now.

What about an Acer with an AMD Turion64 processor?

Similar specs as the other one but with Turion

Acer makes a good machine and the AMD Turion processor is, in my opinion,
worlds better than any Celeron processor by Intel. Get the most RAM your
money will allow, and if at all possible, get a dedicated video card with at
least 64 MB of RAM.
