I am currently running
PHP Version 4.2.2 on Red Hat Linux release 9 (Shrike)
with Apache/2.0.40 (Red Hat Linux)
I would like to upgrade to the latest version of PHP (4.3.10 ?).
PHP was pre-installed as RPM version, I would like to know where i can
find an RPM upgrade...
What are the steps to take, will original php.ini be overwritten,
do i need to change Apache confg files.

In my experience, it's almost impossible to do such thing. At least I
couldn't. You have to upgrade tons of packages. It's easier to just upgrade
the whole distro.
Good luck anyway, I'll follow this thread with a lot of interest ;-)
Original config files are kept and new config files are created as
php.ini.rpmnew. Of course, it's easy to backup them—just in case.
