I'm a php beginner. My website has (or will have) two navigation
menus: a horizontal one at the top, and a vertical one to the side.
Could someone suggest a way to do this? I want both menus to "know"
what the current page is and modify themselves accordingly. The top
menu will more or less simply reflect the current path. The side menu
will reflect the current path as well as list all of the top-level

This usually depends on the file setting a variable to indicate what
page it's on, or getting path information from the URI or file system.
For instance - the top menu you want is called "breadcrumbs". You can
find several example such as
