I am a newbie. I have a large number of images. Is there a function that
return a small image without first writing to disk. I want to minimize the
number of files I have on my disk. This is for intenrnal application that I
want to develop. It will be accessed through local area network.

-read the image
-resize the image
-return the result to browser

Yes, you can use gd image resizing, you might want to read about gd
and the functions of it here !
