i can't get errors to print to my browser.

i went to php.ini and set...

display_errors = On           [Security]

error_reporting = E_ALL | E_STRICT        [Code Cleanliness,

i restarted my computer, fired up apache and still can't find out why
my session_start() is screwing up my program.  ;-)
can someone tell me what i'm doing wrong here?

I think you need to remove the "[Security]" and "[Code Cleanliness,"
from the end of those lines.  I leave these two settings defaulted
(commented out) and find my errors in the Apache error log:

D:\Programs\Apache Group\Apache2\logs\error.log

convert uppercase WORDS to single keystrokes to reply

Just check if you really edited the *right* INI file. Use phpinfo().

You won't see any error message unless your code has typos os the like. If
sessions aren't working for whatever reason, it's unlikely you'll get a
printed error message.

Find this chapter in the PHP manual and check everything's fine in the
runtime configuration:

    Main : Function Reference : Session Handling Functions
