Error Checking and Handeling

I have coded for a while with PHP, and I have been primarily self
taught.  I have read numerous books on it, and have only recently
discovered PHP's error handling class.  The books I have hardly cover the
topic of error handling, other than they say it should be done, then they
proceed to give the same examples on the website.

I am looking for any useful information about how to properly code for
error handling and exceptions.  What I've read I can duplicate, however I
do not understand very well.  Are there any good resources that can
explain this aspect of php for me better than the few examples on the
official site?

What I've seen (try/catch/throw) does not look any more efficient then
basic (if) statements to validate if an action or test has passed/failed
and direct code on how to handle such failures. As the majority of my
time coding is spent error checking/handling and making my code better I
figured this is important to me... so any good example code, or tutorials
on line or books would be handy.

I think this is a topic on which we can spend a lot of time explaining it.
But I don't want to re-invent the wheel.

Try this site if you haven't already:

If this does not help there are a lot of ppl around who can.
