- Date functions - too many options

I'm trying to achieve something simple but because of the amount of options
I'm going a bit mad as to getting it achieved.
I simply need a function which will take the current date and then add three
(or some value) months to it.
I then need to prepare that date for insertion into a MySQL table.
I just want some pointers as to what I should be using. I was looking at the
code and playing with the dateadd function and then I see it is an
expiremtnal function. Then I was reading about the Date class (Which seems
to be available from version 5.3 onwards) and then I can see some older ways
for handling date and I thought lets see how he gurus would do it.
So any pointers.
Thanks in advance (I know this should be a simple one)
