Just a quickie...

Does date('Z') change with switching in and out of DST ?
Or is it safer to check with date('I') first? The manual is a little unclear on

I believe that as long as the server's clock is set to make the change, you
should not have to.

OK, I base my calculations on GMT, so I think gmdate() is probably a
safer bet. It's for a map which shows the position of the sun.

I'd quite like to do the same with the moon... I'll bet no-one has a php
function for that !!!!!!
