which book cannot be missed after reading  'PHP for the World Wide Web:
Visual QuickStart Guide' from Larry Ullman (which is pretty good)?

If you want to understand more on how PHP operates:

"Programming PHP" published by OReilley is a really good read written
by the PHP creators it goes into good depth on the PHP syntax.  A
definately good reference.

If you are looking for code to learn from PHP Cookbook by OReilley is
pretty good (though I don't like all their examples).

Good advise.
When you start coding, don't underestimate
When a functions behaves different than you expected, or your code explodes
right into your face, just look up the function, and search through the
usercontributed notes.
They are often very useful.
