- async exec ?

From my reading of the docs, as exec() (and system()) return the
return status it would appear that the php script pauses until
the exec'd process finishes.
I can not see a way to start an async process and return
immediately to the calling script.
Am I missing something, or do I need to have the exec script fork
the new process ?

That's pretty much the key. Wrap what you're doing in something that
spawns a new process and exits immediately. For example,
system('/bin/sh /path/to/long/process &');
system('php /path/to/longprocess.php &');
behave very differently. OSs have different means of spawning new
processes, but any real OS has one.
"Doesn't everybody?" is a question that never expects an answer of "No."
