Artist needs advice.

I am an artist working out of Los Angeles, and I have a project  I've
been working on which may need MySQL and or PHP.
I put an advert in the local paper asking readers to leave a message on
a vonage voicemail number. I've received about  60 messages so far.
People have left some pretty interesting stuff without knowing what the
purpose was.  What I want to do now is create a web site so that I can
make the original messages plus new messages available to people as
I would need some kind of program which polls a POP3 email account for
new messages, and then parses the WAV audio files out of the email and
places them on the web site. I have a good friend who is a web
designer, who can handle the front end, but he doesn't know anything
about database programming - he told me to check in with you guys.
My current web host uses Apache Web Server, Apache SSL Server, MySQL,
qMail POP Server, qMail SMTP server.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I might need to do/ use to
get this idea off the ground?

Any help would be Greatly appreciated!!!

P.S. This is purely an art project. There is no business plan or
intent, nor does it have anything to do with sex or dating.

Re: Artist needs advice.

I doesn't sound like you are planning on programming this yourself. If
you are then you probably have a bunch to learn.

I poked around a bit and found these links about php and pop3

Maybe you could take apart the code for a free php email client and
find the bits that will help you do what you need to do.

Re: Artist needs advice.

hi peter. I was first going to figure out what I need to learn to do
it. Then if it is just too much, I'd find a programmer who would help
me with it... in the interest of furthering art....
Thanks Very much for poking around as you said, I'll check out the web
sites you listed to see if I can figure it out.

cheers to you !!!

Re: Artist needs advice.

Hi John,

Perhaps a good way to start would be to get MySQL, Apache and PHP
running on your computer. Some things on my page might help you

In the file I need to update the XML/XSLT
examples but that shouldn't stop you from learning about all the other
stuff: MySQL, PHP, PEAR DB, Apache, etc

Re: Artist needs advice.

I'd be interested in helping you, and I took on a project similar to
this, but it did not get completed, Due to feasibility, andlack of
budget.  Rich

this part is easy using PHP... do a database lookup for a list of messages
to show:
date, time, link to WAV file

Your best bet is to use a PERL script or binary that POPs mail off a server,
strips the attachment,
and saves the attachment to a directory on the server. If the script does
not put an entry into a database
or file (date, time, WAV path+filename), you could easily modify (or hire
someone) the script to do this at the end.
This is how I would do it at least.

- Hope this helps -

See the PHP imap extension, no need to use anything else but a

Unless next_page.php generates PHP, the script with this include will
only get HTML.
