- Syntax change in 5.12

Beyond the GUI problem and to find a
replacement for Win32::Shell::Execute,
I had an error message:
my $mask = $word;
$mask =~ y/0123456789/----------/;
The line with the regular expression
worked well in V5 built 522 from 1999.
Where is the problem?

Errr, what did the error message say?
Did you look it up in perldiag.pod?
There is no regular expression there!
y/// (tr///) is does not use regular expressions.
contrast that with:
email: perl -le "print scalar reverse qq/moc.liamg0cm.j.dat/"
The above message is a Usenet post.
I don't recall having given anyone permission to use it on a Web site.
