It's been well over a year since I opened the case on my P2B-DS Dual
1.4Ghz P3-S system, and it has been running 7x24 without a glitch.
Last weekend it was frozen when I tried to log on, POST was OK after
hitting reset - but the XP splash didn't appear. Tried safe mode, hangs
at agp440.sys. Hmm, hardware problem.
memtest86 reports a gazillion errors - so my RAM has gone bad?
I don't think so, I know Slot-1 is flaky, time for CPU maintenance.
So I pull the CPUs, service the fans, clean the heatsinks and edge
connectors, apply fresh thermal grease, blow out the case etc. etc.
The CPUs have to be reinstalled 3 or 4 times before it POSTs and detects
both processors, but then XP boots without complaint.
72 hours later it's probably safe to assume annual maintenance was
belated but successful :-)
