Hi, can anyone please tell me what is the fastest cpu that I can fit to
my motherboard?

The M/B is an Asus A7N8X Deluxe, rev 2.0 using bios version 1008.

Its a Socket "A" M/B and I think the fastest cpu for it may either be a
Athlon XP 3200+ or a Sempron 3200+ but I'm not sure which?

Can anyone tell me the main difference between these two.

The Athlon is more capable than a Sempron, which is a "budget" chip designed
after the first Athlon 64's came out.
Another potential issue (I have the same board), is that to use the full
potential of the Athlon XP 3200+, you have to be able to run the FSB at 200.
Mine won't do that and remain stable.  What CPU are you running now, and
what is your current FSB setting?

Yes, my M/B is currently running at 200 (I have a Barton 2500 running at

As I haven't got much spare cash at the mo, I thought a cheap upgrade
would be to put the fastest cpu in this board that I can, and try to
clock it at around 2.4Ghz which I understand is quite possible.

Hopefully the jump from 2.1 ghz to 2.4Ghz (along with another 1Gb of
memory) will up the speed of this old girl a fair bit yet....

If your barton 2500 is unlocked then you already have one of the most
overclockable chips for that board, putting a 3200 in won't get you any more
speed.  If it's multiplier locked then look for a mobile 2400, although they
were very sought after (expensive) last time I looked for a friend.  My
mobile 2400 has run at 2.5GHz for the last 2-3 years water cooled, it
replaced a barton 2500 that topped out at about 2.3Ghz.

You may find it cheaper to change the board and chip to a more common /
faster combination - low end socket 939 and overclock that.

Re: fastest cpu for an asus a7n8x deluxe M/B?

Just don't spend $160 dollars on it. You can get an Asrock motherboard and a
socket 939 cpu on new egg pretty cheap these days. And best of all, you can
transfer your ram vid card and hard drives to work on it too
has agp and pci express slot for graphics. I built a computer using this
board and its stable with good overclocking features.

Manufactures site says its dual core ready but you may have to flash the
bios first.

Look for a mobile barton chip.  They are multiplier unlocked and
overclock very well.  With good cooling and a little extra voltage (a
few tenths of a volt), most will hit 2.5 gig and up.  You'll probably
have to find a used one - the supply of new chips is nearly
non-existant.  I'd try the for-sale forums at Ars Technica and other
tech sites before Ebay.  Buying from a hardware nut, you're more likely
to get straight answers as to how well the chip runs, at what voltage,

You may or may not need to do the multiplier trick mod to get multipiers
over 12.5x.

If you're already running 2.1 gig, don't expect miracles, even if you
hit the jackpot with a 2.8G chip.  That would be a nice boost, but won't
produce much increase in game framerates unless you've got a high end

I think the Sempron 3200+ may actually be a 64-bit CPU.

As stated before, Athlon XP 3200+ was fastest 'stock' CPU for it. But I had
two XP 2500-M processors. Both clocked to 200MHz with no issues whatsoever.
Never had an issue with 200MHz on that board - was one of the nicest mobos I
ever used feature-wise. I still reckon that the nForce sound on those boards
was pretty cool!
