Hi,

I know nothing of this area so be kind :)

If I buy a wi fi enabled smartphone, can I access the internet for free if I
am within range of a free wi-fi hotspot?

If I get one free with a package from say T-mobile will I somehow get
redirected through their servers and charged?

I want to experiment using a smartphone with some internet programs I am
writing for fun, and i dont want to be tied to a package.

So if I can access for free then I would just buy a wi fi enabled phone, say
the C600 and use free access points.

Generally speaking is the speed of wi fi faster than 3G? What sort of
connection speed can I hope for (I know it must depend on the local wi fi
network, but
just as a rule of thumb)

Also does it take longer to connect through a wi-fi link than home ASDL?
That is the continous download speed for a large file is not as important to
me as the
transaction speed (if that makes sense).

Further, how far do these free links reach, say a coffee shop or hotel has
one, can you access them from say, the street or a neighbouring shop?

Are there any other issues I should be aware of?

I am in the UK.

Thanks for any info

Most Wi-Fi hotspots are paid for by you. Your device will pick them up
but you will need to register and pay in order to use it. Some places
offers free access in order to attract you into their establishment!

Not sure about speeds - most Wi-Fi devices are 802.1b - I think thats
11Kbps - so about LAN speed. Some devices are coming out with 802.1g -
54kKbps - but of course the WAP would to support that.
