Are mysql indexes automatically maintained?

I've just applied an index to my mysql 4.0.21 database/tables and it
really helped with speed.  I was wondering if this index I added is
automatically adjusted by mysql over time or do I have to go back say
every week and remake the index?

Mysql 4.0.21
Linux 2.4.30

Making it once is enough. Having an index in a table makes inserts a
little bit slower because MySQL has to sort it when it's inserted. But
you won't notice it unless you insert sereral rows simultaneously and
the speed decrease is usually much less than the gain in speed with
select queries.
