I am looking for a low-priced (and simple) converter from mrSID -> geoTIFF.
(we do not have ArcInfo, Erdas, or built in support). We are using IDRISI
Kilimanjaro.

I see a commercial product called GlobalMapper that can do this (~$300). But
is there anything else that can do the same sort of processing?

If you do some hunting, you should be able to find LizardTech's original
"free" viewer which will do this (Mr.Sid GeoViewer 2.1). I was quite
annoyed when they stopped distributing it >:-| It also allowed for the
tiff output to be resampled if necessary.

There is a copy of the discontinued MrSid GeoViewer on the
"NASA MrSid Satellite Images of Canada" CDROMs that are
available from my website:
http://members.shaw.ca/davepatton/maps.html#canmrsid
but that wouldn't be free :-)

From the MrSid GeoViewer 2.1 Help file:
Ability to view, save and print MrSID metadata
One click of the Data button displays the MrSID metadata for an image.
Metadata may be copied to the clipboard, saved to a text file, or printed
to your desktop printer.
Export to GeoTIFF & TIFF with TAB file
Create TAB files for your MrSID image for use in MapInfo; or, export your
MrSID image to a GeoTIFF image and retain all of the metadata tags from
your original GeoTIFF image.

It looks like the "MrSID Decode" programs is still available. I use it
for just exactly that purpose, and it works OK. I'm running the Windoze
(command line - how in hell can they call it Windows?) version, but their
webpage shows both Linux and Solaris ports for download.

If you have a bunch of files to decode, you can write up a quick little
DOS batch file to process all of them. It takes several minutes per file.
