Is it possible to use my mpx220 with the USB cable supplied , as a modem
for my laptop when there is not a hotspot available?
I just would like to use a dial up connection and use up some of my
minutes on cingular.

Use as a modem with Cingular in my experience is a bit "luck of the draw."
When I first got my MPx220 from Cingular, I asked about using it as a modem.
The salesrep told me that what I needed was the Media Works program and in
mid December, 2004 that provided unlimited access. There was no mention of
a Data Plan.
I was able to "activate the modem link" in my MPx220, connect my MPx220 with
either the USB cable or use the Bluetooth Connection to my laptop; the
laptop recognized the MPx220 as a Smartphone Wireless Modem. It really then
connected only as a wireless access point to the Cingular network which was
then serving as an ISP of sorts. I could bring up Internet Explorer on my
laptop and surf away. I could also bring up Quicken and do online banking
with no problems.
Only thing I could not get it to do was a VPN connection. I called Cingular
to find out what I might be doing wrong. They said nothing had been done
wrong, but that VPN would only work with a Data Plan -- $80.00 per month for
unlimited access. They also said that even using is as a wireless access
point as I had been was only a capability of the data plan. "Mysteriously,"
I could no longer surf the net from my laptop, etc., but Cingular maintains
they changed nothing.
To me, a true modem is "vendor independent," i.e., should be able to dial up
to any ISP -- ATT Worldnet, AOL, etc. -- and not be "tied" to using
Cingular. I wrote to Motorola to find out just what "modem" meant to them
as far as the MPx220 is concerned. They replied, "We do apologize for the
inconvenience, we understand that you really want to use your phone as a
modem to connect with your ISP (Sbc,Aol, Att,Earthlink, etc), but in this
case you should have the GSM Data services activated with your Cingular
Service Provider, otherwise your phone will make only normal phone calls and
not Modem calls that are required to connect with your ISP (Sbc,Aol,
Att,Earthlink,etc)."
However, I think it's a bit "luck of the draw" since I've read of other
members of this Newsgroup who have only the Media Works package and are able
to use their MPx220 phone as a modem/Cingular wireless access point, so that
they can get to Internet from their laptop. Apparently, they never spoke to
the Cingular rep I did who disabled that capability for my account.
