XP Media Center crashes laptop when minimized

Threaded View
Hey all, I'm at my wit's end with this problem.  A few months ago
Picture It (which is no longer supported but came installed on my
laptop) would crash my computer, just randomly make the screen go
black and I'd have to manually reboot.  I did a bunch of stuff (Hijack
This, AdAware scans, AntiVir scans, CCleaner, Windows updates) and
eventually the problem went away.

Now Media Center is doing the same thing, except only when I minimize
the window.  If I'm playing a DVD and stop it, then minimize the
window, the screen goes black and I have to manually reboot.  I did
all the same things I did when I had Picture It problems but nothing
I've tried works, and while I find people online saying this happens
to them in Vista, I have XP.  I have even sent reports to MS through
the reporting software that occasionally comes up after a crash, and
it told me to do an update, but when I tried I was unable to.

I'm using an HP Pavilion zd8000 laptop with Windows XP Media Center
Edition version 2002.

If no one has any ideas on how to fix this, then can you tell me if
you think uninstalling and reinstalling would work?

I'm just bumping this in case someone missed it earlier.  Media
Center is *vital* to the online work I do, so I am really desperate
for some help.  Thanks.

These groups that you are using are actually usenet, using Microsoft's news
servers, they aren't provided by Google. For future reference, unlike web
based forums, you don't accomplish anything by trying to bump, your post
stays where it is. You need to allow a day or even more to receive a reply
to your post.

Really, please don't assume I'm a newbie who doesn't know what Usenet
is, I've been posting to Usenet since 1993 and I know perfectly well
that Google Groups is NOT Usenet.
And I believe you're wrong about "bumping".  Every program I've used
to access Usenet -- nn, rn, Agent, Pine, and Google Groups -- puts all
new replies and posts at the top of the list unless the user has
configured otherwise.  By posting a new reply to my own post, that would
indeed put the entire thread at the top of the list, therefore "bumping"
it.
  Sorry to have troubled you.

Re: XP Media Center crashes laptop when minimized

Not that it matters, but there are many dedicated newsreaders that don't
bump an entire thread in the way you describe by default.
Outlook/Express/Windows Live maintains the hierarchy of the posts with the
date of the OP being the determining factor. If you have been using the
usenet since 93, you should also realize that having an attitude is a
sure-fire way to *not* get help from other users - David B was just trying
to be helpful.

What you haven't said is if you have tried a repair or reinstall of the OS
itself at some point.

How up to date is the OS, you said you have MCE 2002, which would mean you
have never install SP2 for Windows XP. The installation of SP2 (or SP3) will
automatically update MCE to version 2004. You may be seeing the underlying
XP version and not the MC version, the only way to see that is in the MC
interface (Settings, General, About).

This alone tells me you haven't been around since 1993

Re: XP Media Center crashes laptop when minimized

Whoops, forgot... What update did it tell you to do that failed? Does the
event log say anything about the crash?
