Problems connecting a HP laptop with WMC and Xbox 360 Elite

Hopefully this question hasn't been addressed previously, and if it has, I
apologize for the redundancy.

I just received my new HP laptop running Vista Home Premium and I'm looking
to connect it to my 360 elite. After running through the set up multiple
times (making sure to allow extenders through the windows firewall and making
sure the norton firewall was off) I am continuously informed by the xbox that
the connection to the media center PC failed. Further, when I test the
connection to the extender on my pc, I'm told that there is little to no
signal. I checked the connection to the network on both the xbox and the pc,
and both seem okay. At this point, I'm pretty sure there must be an obscure
(to me, at least) setting on the PC that is not allowing the two devices to
communicate. If anyone has any insight about this, I'd be most appreciative.
Thanks in advance.

After thinking about it further, are there certain wireless router settings
that I need to change in order to allow the xbox to connect to my media
center PC? The router is a standard linksys wireless-g type. Thanks.

which model exactly and what firmware? are you broadcasting the
SSID? what kind of security are you using?

Re: Problems connecting a HP laptop with WMC and Xbox 360 Elite

The laptop does have a fingerprint reader. I haven't tried to uninstall
Norton yet, so if you think that would be a good idea, I'll try that tonight.

The router is a Linksys WRT54G with v.8 firmware. The SSID is being
broadcast, and the security is WPA.

see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941949 for info on
a fingerprint reader issue. Norton is something I won't let my
friends and family use. I personally use NOD32 and Windows Firewall
and Defender. I'm behind a router with a SPI firewall as well.

Re: Problems connecting a HP laptop with WMC and Xbox 360 Elite

I uninstalled norton, disabled the fingerprint reader, and removed any
passwords from the computer. Yet I'm still unable to get the xbox to connect
to WMC. As far as I can tell, the fingerprint reader being disabled should
keep it from interfering with the connection. Have I misinterpreted this? Is
there a setting on the router firewall that should be changed? If so, can you
tell me what that is. Thanks a lot.

Re: Problems connecting a HP laptop with WMC and Xbox 360 Elite

it is the software as opposed to the fingerprint hardware. can you
uninstall the software? (I believe it is downloadable on the HP site
if you want to reinstall it).

Re: Problems connecting a HP laptop with WMC and Xbox 360 Elite

Success! Uninstalling the fingerprint reader software allowed me to connect
media center and the xbox quickly. Hopefully I won't have any further
connection problems. I am surprised that there isn't a way to maintain the
ability to use the fingerprint reader while still being able to connect,
perhaps some sort of software disable. Thanks very much for your help.

Re: Problems connecting a HP laptop with WMC and Xbox 360 Elite

glad this worked. you should file an incident or similar report with
HP on the issue. perhaps the more people that complain about it, the
more work will be done towards a fix.
