Need help with Windows XP Reinstall/Reformat

Threaded View
Okay, got myself in a bind.  I built my PC about a year and a half ago.  When
I did, I built it with 2 hard drives, and assigned them as Drive E (master)
and Drive F (slave).  I decided to do a fresh install of Windows, but wanted
to change the drive name.  So before I did the reformat, I did a regedit32
and renamed drive E to C.  Now when I reboot my PC with the Windows disk, it
tells me it cannot recognize a hard drive.  It actually told me this before I
changed the drive name, but the problem is that I cannot get to my desktop
now.  Won't boot at all.

Need help please!

Forgot to mention that my Motherboard only has SATA connections, and both of
my HD's are IDE.  I have an adapter hooked up to the Motherboard with both of
these drives connected.

Re: Need help with Windows XP Reinstall/Reformat

The problem is that your IDE controller is not being recognized by the =
Windows installer. You will need to download the drivers for the IDE =
controller card from the manufacturer.   Re-run setup.  When you see the =
Press F6 to load drivers prompt, do so and point it to the floppy disk =
that the drivers are on.

You don't say which IDE controller you have, but Maxtor has instructions =
on their web site for their card.  Most others should be similar.   =
Scroll down to Installing drivers during Windows NT 4.x/2000 Fresh =
Installation.

Re: Need help with Windows XP Reinstall/Reformat

I appreciate the quick reply Doug.  I actually needed more HD space on my
computer, so I bought a 320GB SATA HD.  So here is my set-up now:

320GB Western Digital HD SATA
Sony IDE DVD Burner
120GB IDE Western Digital HD IDE

The 320 and Sony are hooked up to my Motherboard via the SATA and IDE
connectors.  The 120 is connected via the IDE connection through the IDE
adapter.  My 320 will be set-up as my boot disk.  However, after installing
the HD (I connected the SATA connection to SATA 0 out of the 4 that I have on
my Motherboard), and formatting the HD with the utility software that it came
with, I cannot get any further.

It asks me to reboot with the boot disk,  I do this, and Windows tells me
that it's detecting my hardware config...then nothing.

Re: Need help with Windows XP Reinstall/Reformat

First, check your BIOS for a setting to reset the DMI data.  How this is =
worded will vary between BIOS's.   All it does is force a hardware =
redetect at the BIOS level.  If that doesn't work, try disconnecting the =
IDE hard disk and doing the XP install. When complete, shutdown the =
computer and reconnect it.   You can reassign drive letters in Disk =
Management.
