How do you point MCE 2005 to different media folders

I have an external hard drive with all my music, video, and pictures on it.
How do you point MCE to those folders manually without a remote. I looked
everywhere in the interface? Help would be appreciated!

Re: How do you point MCE 2005 to different media folders

From each My Music/Video/Pictures menu, press the more_info
button on your remote.  There will be an option to add or
remove media/folders.  The procedure is identical for pictures
and video - slightly different for music.  But once you press
the more_info button, it should be pretty easy to follow the
necessary steps from there.

Re: How do you point MCE 2005 to different media folders

Bob
Can you stream music / video directly from a networked storage device or
does an MCE need to access media stored on the main Media Center only.  E.g.
If I hook up a Buffalo Terastation to the network can the MCE in the bedroom
access the media directly on the storage box ?
Many thanks,
Fred Destin

Note: context is planning a complete home automation install on WMC combined
with ConvergeX home automation platform and trying to figure out how to deal
with the media library

Re: How do you point MCE 2005 to different media folders

Fred,

As long as those folders are set up as network shares on the Terastation
(which they should be by default) they will be available to a Media Center
Extender without having to be mapped on the MCE PC itself. Just be careful
about permissions on them. I'm not familiar with how those are set up on the
Terastation but I have its smaller brother (Linkstation) and it works fine
with MCE.

One tip: create shares for specific content types - you can't drill down
(e.g. say you have a share called "Media" and within that you have the
folders Music, Pictures, and Video. You won't be able to get beyond the Media
level which prolongs the discovery process as when you search for music the
MCE will also search the Pictures and Video files...)

RE: How do you point MCE 2005 to different media folders

Mr. Trixie....steps to adding files to MCE2005

Example:
Start MCE 2005, select "My Music" from main menu, right click anywhere in
the blue part of the screen, select "Add Music", check the circle with "Add
Folders" next to it, check the box "add folders on this computer", now this
next part is a little tricky...you must know where your music folders are on
the external hard drive...scroll through the list of folders....(eg.  C
drive, my documents...etc.) til you find the drive letter of your external
hard drive...then once you find it...you can click the box in front of it and
it will add all the folders of the drive...or you can click the plus sign and
only chose the folders that you know have music in them...after this MCE 2005
should add all the songs in the folders you selected to your "My Music"
folder in the main menu of MCE 2005

eg. of a path...   G:\My Music Folder\Albums\The Black Eyed Peas

Again this is an example scenario...yours may be a little different but just
about the same as I just gave you....this is the same process that you would
use when adding pictures and videos from the external hard drive...only you
would use the appropriate selection on the main menu of MCE 2005 and of
course only add folders that have pictures or videos in them.

Hope this helps

I understand the steps for adding new folders to Media Center.  However,
when I get to the point where you select which folder in the directory tree
to add, I only see some of my folders, not all.  For example most of the
folders in my "My Documents" folder do not appear.  Can you please help
understand what is going on and how to fix it so all folders show?

(I have made all hidden files visible etc, tried sharing the folders that
don't appear etc and nothing works.)
