Hello,
I am running Windows 7 64 bit and have recently gotten interested in an
extender. I found and bought 2 Linksys products. The first one I cancelled
even
before I got it since I found out it was made for XP only. I bought
another one
(DMA 2100) and got it only to find that in order to make it work, I needed
an
HDMI cable. My only connection options are composite video and S Video. Is
there
anyone out there that can tell me if there are any products that will work
with
Windows 7 and will work with the above connections, preferably composite
video?
Please email me at jay@jaygraff.com if you can help. If I can find a
product
name that does not cost an arm and leg and is semi available, I can
research it,
but right now I am shooting in the dark.
Many Thanks.

Here's your extender:

(Amazon.com product link shortened)
F8&qid=1307059147&sr=8-3

Works, and works great.  I went 7MC (yes, 64 bit) in March, and bought
two of them--and they both work great.  Small and quiet, and $200 is the
right price.  And out of the box, they're composite video out.

This is the ONLY current extender on the market today.  And it works
flawlessly, extending the 7MC experience perfectly.  Anything I can do
with TV on my 7MC box, I can do on the extender--watch recorded TV,
manage recordings and schedules, even watch live TV from one of the
tuners.

Note:  I hardwired mine to the network, and avoided wifi.

Yeah, but what about everything else?

I modern HTPC is about more than just cloning an S1 Tivo.

What do you mean about "what about everything else"?

The HTPC itself running Win Media Center is very flexible.  The extender
is designed to extend MC with respect to television.  The movie in the
DVD drive, or Netflix, or whatever else is going on with the HTPC
itself--not so much.

You mean besides just recording and playing back TV?

    You can't be serious?

I'm asking for *specific* requirements.  That was the root of my
question.

The extender works perfectly with recorded TV, and with live TV signal.
It does not pass the HTPC's DVD player through.  The extender has to be
able natively to access and play the videos that are stored somewhere
else.  The extender has to natively be able to play Netflix, as it can't
take the HTPC's Netflix capability as passthrough.

Re: Extender Help

graff69 had written this in response to
http://www.talkcomputer.com/mediacenter/Re-Extender-Help-110173-.htm :
I clicked that amazon link and saw that it went to an XBox. Does that mean
I
need to buy an xbox to watch a movie from my PC? Also, if I DID get that
one,
will it run independently in Windows 7. I currently have no interest in
playing
games or any other Xbox features. The extender part is the only thing I
would
want or use.

Thanks and sorry to be such a pest.

um, no.

It's a Media Center extender.  In fact, I have my two set up so that
when they turn on, they go immediately to that function.

I use mine solely as Media Center extenders and DVD players for the TVs
they're hooked to.  I do not play any XBox games or do anything else
with these.  The fact that they can do other things is irrelevant.

This is how Microsoft sells more of them.  I would never have bought
these otherwise.
