AIW 9000 and MCE2005 - Media Center is not working

Threaded View

I have dell PC (Dimension 4600) with ATI 9000 readon card. Recently I have
upgraded my OS from MCE 2004 to MCE 2005. My MCE 2004 use to work without any
issues but when I installed (with the help of DELL support), my Media Center
stopped working. I am not able to play any video.

I do not have any issues playing the video using other tools (example:
Windows Media Player), never have any problems.

I am getting error 'Your video card or drivers are not compatible with Media
Center', after I open Media Center in MCE2005.

I have tried getting the drivers installed from ATI website, but still I am
getting this error.

System:

DELL Dimention 4600
Video/TV Capture card: AIW 9000

Anyone know what could be the problem?

Thanks,
Shailendra

Re: AIW 9000 and MCE2005 - Media Center is not working

Most likely you have no DVD decoder software on your computer after the
upgrade since it is none is included in MCE.
Suggest you get the Nvidia PureVideo decoder package from their Website for
$20.

Re: AIW 9000 and MCE2005 - Media Center is not working

Just to add for the OP, if you'd like to determine if the decoder is your
problem before making a purchase you can download the 30 day trial of the
Nvidia platinum package from
http://www.nvidia.com/object/dvd_decoder_1.02-223-trial.html
If it takes care of the problem, uninstall it, then purchase and install the
$20 package.

Re: AIW 9000 and MCE2005 - Media Center is not working

Thanks David for the reply and suggestion.

I am just wondering whether this is anything to do with DirectX version or
MPEG2.

Re: AIW 9000 and MCE2005 - Media Center is not working

David and others,

I did installed the Video Decoder fromnVIDIA website and checked with
DECCHECK utility and everything looks great.

Then I started Media Center, I got the same error 'Your video card or
drivers are not compatible with Media Center'

I use to get another message in the Media Center following this error message

Title of the error: VIDEO ERROR
Message: Files needed to display video are not installed or not working
correctly. Please restart Media Center and/or restart the computer' with 'OK'
button.

I have tried closing and reopening but I am getting the same errors.

Anyone have seen this kind of error message. I am sure someone might...

Re: AIW 9000 and MCE2005 - Media Center is not working

The error you are seeing normally refers to a problem with your TV
tuner/video capture card or it's drivers, or to your decoder it normally
does not refer to a problem with your graphics/video output card or drivers.
Using Decheck it the Nvidia driver selected as the Preferred driver for MCE?
Can you play a DVD with Media Center?  If yes there is no problem with the
graphics card or drivers or with the decoder.
Have you also installed the latest XP tuner drivers from the ATI Website for
your AIW 9000 card?

Re: AIW 9000 and MCE2005 - Media Center is not working

Curious,

I can only view pictures from Media Center but I can't play any video
including DVD. If I try to play video files (or DVD), I am getting error
'Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly.
Please restart Media Center and/or restart the computer' with OK button.

I did have tried latest drivers from ATI Website but no luck.

Thanks,
Shailendra

Re: AIW 9000 and MCE2005 - Media Center is not working

MCE 2005 requires that the video card be capable of DirectX 9 hardware
acceleration. The AIW 9000 has only DirectX 8.1 support.

Re: AIW 9000 and MCE2005 - Media Center is not working

If I recall correctly the ATI 9000 is also not capable of running with a HD
tuner, as it can't handle the bandwidth and only has 64 meg of ram. The only
compelling reason to upgrade from MCE 2004 to 2005 that I remember was to be
able to upgrade to digital tuners for HD.

If the OP wants to add a digital tuner in the future is may be easier and
less frustrating to find a newer more capable AGP graphics card.  Also if
possible it might be easier to roll back to MCE 2004 then to get the tuner
and graphics on an AIW to play nice in MCE 2005.

Thanks Curious for your reply on this.

I want to make sure the hardware is compatible with MCE2005 before I buy
Decoder software. I heard lot of stories on this that this may not work on
MCE2005. I would like to get everyone opinion on this.

Well try it for free then the Nvidia XP Pure Video MPEG2 decoder was
specifically designed to work on XP.

Re: AIW 9000 and MCE2005 - Media Center is not working

In addition to the decoder issue, does the 9000 supports DirectX 9? I seem
to find varying info on the web as to whether any 9000 supports it or only
some 9000 cards.

Re: AIW 9000 and MCE2005 - Media Center is not working

Other experts have already suggested what you have to do. I wish to add the
following utility that helps you to 'determine  if an MPEG-2 video decoder
(also called a DVD decoder) is installed' on your computer...

"Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility"

Re: AIW 9000 and MCE2005 - Media Center is not working

Thanks Sengupta for your reply.

I have used the utility you suggested to check the MPEG-2 video decor. I got
following results.

Looks like there are lot of decoders are installed in my system but looks
like only one is compatible with Media Center.

Decoder Vendor: Cyberlink Video/SP Decoder for Dell
Decoder File name: clvsd.ax
Decoder version: 3.5.0.3204
MCE Compatible: I saw a check mark
Preferred Decoder: I saw a check mark

Does this means my system has correct decoder ?

Sengupta,

It is compatible (per your message), but still my Media Center doesn't work.

Can you think of any thing.

Re: AIW 9000 and MCE2005 - Media Center is not working

Your graphic card is one of the main issues here. It has DirectX® 8.1
support. For Win MCE 2005, you need a graphic card with DirectX 9.0 support
though many claim this card works with MCE 2005 e.g. the link [

provided by Curious in his reply.

Jamie, Sengupta, Jolt, Curious and David,

Now we come to the conclusion that AIW9000 may not work with MCE2005, Can
you suggest some cheaper Video cards for my system. Please realize that this
system power supply is 250 Watts, so I want the Video cards which support
this power supply.

Thanks,
Shailendra Chinta
