I just recently have been getting this dialog box opening.
media center receiver service has encountered a problem and needs to close.

when I looked at the detailed info I saw this.
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERc676.dir00\ehRecvr.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERc676.dir00\appcompat.txt

My media center extender seems to still work.

I also noticed that windows had an update 2 days ago... around the time this
started. Does anyone know of a fix. it still keeps poping up.

Have you restarted your computer since the update?

If you have, I would try removing the update and running Windows Update
again. It is possible that there was an error with the update that
corrupted a file or two. If you are not sure which update, go to Windows
Update and select "Review your update history"... the updates are listed in
descending chronological order so you should start looking at the top...
there was a recent MCE update (Update Rollup 1 for eHome Infrared Receiver
for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (KB888795)) so perhaps you should
start with this one. It can be removed from the add/remove software applet
in Control Panel. Remove it and then re-run Windows Update to re-apply it
(or download it manually from the MS site). You could also try updates from
2 days ago since that's when the problem started (assuming the MCE update
was applied before that)

good luck

I installed Update KB888795 just a few moments ago then rebooted my computer.
I started having problems with my IR remote directly after that. I'd get the
answering lite on the IR receiver whenever I'd push a button. However Media
Center would not respond to any numeric inputs from the keypad of the remote.
I could only change channels by using the up/down arrows and even that was
extremely slow.

I was also getting hardware error messages in Device Manager for 2 "Human
Interface Devices" after the update.

I've subsequently uninstalled the KB888795 update and everything is back to
normal now.

I have the same problems at times and I think I've narrowed it down to a
piece of software. Do you, by chance, have ArcSoft ShowBizDVD 2 installed on
your computer?

I had this problem, too. I called the chat section for my HP Media Center
Pc and this is what they told me to do. IT WORKS!! It does disable the TV
section of the media center for watching tv on your pc, but I do not use
that feature anyway. I had loaded Muvee technology ver. 6 and then started
getting that pesky error. I could not get rid of it. But the fix below did
work. No more pesky error!
*************************
Issue : "Media Center Receiver Service has encountered a problem and needs
to close." This error message pops up every 10 seconds even when we are not
using the Media Center on the computer

Cause : If the TV Tuner Card installed on the computer is being used by any
other software other than Media Center for capturing purposes this issue
will occur.

Description : Starting with Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE)
2005, a process (ehrec.exe) runs at all times, monopolizing the tuner device
on the system. The solution is to disable the service responsible for
starting the "ehrec.exe" process. Note that this does not occur with
versions of MCE prior to 2005. This issue will only occur if a customer is
using a software other than Media Center to capture Analog Signals.

Resolution/Workaround:

Navigate to CONTROL PANEL --> ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS --> SERVICES.

Find the "Media Center Receiver Service" in the list; rIght-click on it and
select "Properties."

On the "...properties" window that appears when you do so, find the "Startup
type:" entry on the "General" tab. Set "Startup Type" to "Disabled" (as
shown in the screenshot below) and hit APPLY.

4- Then, reboot the computer.

CAUTION : Disabling this service will prevent the Media Center from showing
Live TV. Please educate the customer by informing him that the TV Tuner card
can be used by a single software at a time, so if the Media Center is
running in the processes (ehrec.exe), use of any other capturing application
will cause this error to pop-up on the screen. Ideally customer should only
use the Media Center softwares for capturing purposes.
