I'm kind-a-new at all ths stuff. Permit me to apologize
in advance for any annoying ignorance I demonstrate.
But, I really am trying.

I have a box running Gentoo. It is on my local area
network. On my side of the router, it owns the following
IP address:

From a Windoze XP box on the LAN, I open IE and enter
in the address field. IE fails to display the page, complaining
of the following - we've all seen it before...

But when I type in there, I get a promising
Apache message saying...

Thanks for using Apache!

... Well, like I said at the outset, I'm a newbie. If a security issue
is preventing me from viewing the page, I haven't a clue. I can tell
you that I've had successful psftp and pscp sessions from this window$
box to the linux server. So there you are. I hope someone out there
knows a lot more about this than I do.

It looks to me, that you are trying to access your home page (/home/mlh)
from a browser, well, default installation of apache doesn't work like
that. If userDir is enabled in apache, you should use ~mlh instead
of /home/mlh, and this should point you to your html, www or wathever
is called directory in your homedir.

It has nothing to do with sercurity, go to and read
the docs about UserDir.
