i just bought a new sony vaio laptop....
when i watch mpeg or avi files in full screen .. most of then have
black vertical side bars on the edges of the screen somewgat around 3cm
while for some of the dvd i can see the full screen movie....
please help if anyone has experienced this or else..knows how to

This is correct: you have a 16:9 widescreen that will show HD and
letterbox DVD in the correct aspect ratio. Most avi, etc. files are
4:3, equivalent to 12:9. Since full screen fills with the height first,
you have leftover, unfilled black bars on the side. It can be no other
way unless you want things stretched horizontally with avi, so that
everyone looks fat.
