I'm going to guess. Most, if not all, desktop video cards have at most
two output channels to support two monitors. One might be DVI and the
other analog, but two is the rule. Some of the SLI and dual-card setups
might support four monitors, but I have not experience.
You are lucky on a notebook to manage two externals, but of course the
internal LCD is inoperative and the dock has the card, so two monitors
remains the rule. Given that notebook vendors seem to be limiting video
to either chipset video or shared video adapters, I'm certain that the
rule of two will be with us in notebook computers for a very long time.
