I've got a Compaq M700 and I want to play Mpegs etc directly on to my TV. Is
it as simple as plugging a cable into the video jack socket and then into
the TV - I assume at the TV end of the cable it would be one of those
red/white/yellow connections?

If I remember correctly, the M700 only has VGA and RCA Video outputs.  To
connect your TV you'll just need an RCA cable (the yellow/red/white
connection cables you spoke of - red = right channel audio, white = left
channel audio, yellow = video).  The picture won't be very good...

Don't know specifically about the M700, but with some notebooks the TV
needs to be connected and switched on _before_  you boot the PC - the
video adapter autosenses the load.  Otherwise the PC will boot
normally and not drive the video output socket. My old Compaq Armada
and present Dell both work that way.

You may also have to fiddle with screen modes (resolution and refresh
rates) on the notebook.
