I have a Sony laptop that I upgraded the memory from 512mb to 1gb. XP
Home saw the 1gb OK.

I upgraded(?) to XP Pro and now Pro only sees 512mb of memory...

I've switched dimms in the slots and same thing, only 512mb not 1gb.
Couldn't find any dip switches might be for memory configuration.

I also have Solaris 10 loaded on a second partition on the laptop and
it sees the full 1gb, but Pro still only sees 512mb.

The PCG-GRV series has a known failure in the solder connections in the
RAM slots, and intermittent loss of RAM is the first sign of impending
total failure.  When my GRV670 slots failed, the Mandrake install
continued to report the total RAM , but it was clear that the RAM in one
slot was functionally missing.

The RAM slot solder can be reflowed with the proper tools. You might see
the unofficial Sony Vaio site for poster SMDBIOS who has repaired many
Vaio notebooks with the RAM slot problem.

Note also that the GPU is located opposite to the RAM on the mainboard.
It can also fail due to fractured solder joints.
