This vaio will randomly shut down anywhere from 5 to 120+ minutes...the
primary fan works the secondary fan (graphics) will run for a second on
startup but not after. I have checked for dust build up in both fans
and radiator fins and they are clean. I also have tried the 256 meg
memory module in both slots. I have even set up a house fan to blow
cool air on the inside of the laptop with the speaker cover and
keyboard open.

This notebook came to me with XP Pro service pack 2 installed. I put XP
Home in to see if just maybe if it was the OS.....but that wasn't it.
Which BTW is a pain  to do when the notebook keeps shutting down during
installation .....LOL.  Oh  I also thought maybe it could be a bad Hard
drive so I also booted to a CD rom with the hard drive removed  but it
still shuts down.

The lower back portion of the LCD seems to be quit warm. (is this

The heat on the bezel between the hinges is from the inverter.  It's
normal.   The shutdowns could be RAM itself, failing solder connection
in the RAM sockets, HD, or thermal.  For thermal, try hmonitor.exe to
monitor the temp.  For HD, download the manufacturer's drive health
utility.  For RAM chips, download memtest86.exe and run the extended
test.  For the failing solder connection on the RAM sockets,, highly recommended at
