I never used a mouse pad with an optical mouse, but I know most people
do. The reason being is that they slide better without. Plus I heard
years ago that optical mice don't need them.
Well guess what? My optical mice sometimes jumps around for no known
reason. It never got really bad, so I just ignored this behavior for
years. And today of all days, it really got bad. So I grabbed a mouse
pad and it is perfect. Everybody else knew this, eh?

shiny, reflective surfaces.
For a long time now, I've just taken a piece of good printer paper (real
smooth) and wrapped that around a mouse pad. Gives good movement and best
tracking surface for the rodent. White surface also allows it to go into
sleep mode more easily.
