Hello All,

Need a little help here.  I have a Toshiba A85-S107 laptop.  Recently
the display started turning off just after boot up, return from
hibernation, or even just after the lid is reopened.

In all cases, the display is on nice and bright for about 1 or 2
seconds, then goes very dim.  This is true after repeated closing and
opening of the lid.

Digging around on the net revealed that in all likelihood, the CCFL
inverter is whacked.

So I bought a new one and put it in - the behavior is exactly the

I wonder if there is a bad switch somewhere that is not working right
- a switch that tells the inverter to shut off when the lid is
closed.  There is no sign of such a switch on the outside of the case,
and I didn't see anything obvious when replacing the inverter.

Anyone know how I might be able to fix this?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Bruce! Yes it could be the lid switch or the lamp itself. The
inverter supplies about 1800 volts (startup voltage) to the lamp usually
through two heavily insulated wires. Lamps can be hard to replace and
are sometimes integrated into the LCD panel really well. And most shops
only replace the lamp and the LCD together as one unit. And lamps costs
like $25 and the LCD and lamp as one unit costs like $300 plus.

Thanks for the note Bill - any idea where I might look for the lid
switch?  Is it integrated into the hinge or something?

Hi Bruce. I never seen one integrated into the hinge yet. The two types
I've seen are:

1) Mechanical switch: Usually the bottom half has a switch when the top
half inserts the latch into the bottom half. This is common on older

2) Magnetic switch: A small magnetic is mounted either on the side or
top of the LCD panel and when the lid is closed, the magnetic is close
enough to cause the switch to change states.

I haven't done much with lid switches, so maybe people with more
experiences than me maybe able to tell you more. I do have two Gateway
MX6124 laptops. One is a refurbished and the lid switch never did
anything. Another one I bought on eBay for a spare. And that eBay one
the lamp with sometimes lite and sometimes not. I changed the inverter
and it worked fine for about 2 months and now the same thing. So with
this one I have the same problem as you do. As the inverter could have
failed again, the lid switch, or the lamp itself. At least I have spare
parts to work with here. ;-)

A thorough read here might point you in the right direction. I didn't
find much on your model exactly, but one of the posts was very similiar
to your problem. Good Luck.
