on, the display is so dim it is barely readable.. I have found that by using
the Fn-F3 combination to put the unit to sleep then waking it with the power
button, the display returns to normal. Anyone know what causes this and how
to fix it?

What happens when you use Fn+F6 and Fn+F7 to adjust the brightness? If you
don't have the range you need, maybe downloading Powerstrip will help.
