thinkpad freezes on adapter but not on battery

This is an ibm thinkpad i series, model 1492. Some of the power adapters
for this model were defective and caused fires or burned out mainboards.
This one started freezing after about 20 minutes plugged in. The ibm
tech people thought the mainboard was burned out.

Dr. Dos said nothing was wrong.

I saw a post where someone was advising to try using just the battery,
which we did, and it hasn't frozen after 1 hr. 15 minutes.

I was wondering if replacing the power connector (on the laptop) might
fix it. (IBM already replaced the power adapter - it was on recall.)

Would appreciate any help with this.
